Pickens' Hallway Before & After

You wouldn't think that the smallest hallway in the world would really matter when it comes to freshening up your home, but I am here today to tell you that it can make a huge difference!

Our hallway was the same tan color as the living room with dingy white trim and doors and a ceiling that was a hot mess.

There was a HUGE return air vent in the floor that was super uncomfortable and loud to walk on, and you couldn't help but walk on it as it led into the bathroom and the two bedrooms. Not to mention that anytime friends came over, they'd try stepping around it because it gave you the feeling that you could fall into a big black hole even though it was perfectly secure and safe.

Needless to say, I couldn't wait to renovate and revamp this tiny little space, and get that vent out of the floor. If you couldn't tell already, this hallway was my pet peeve at this house. I seriously hated that vent.

We went with the same crisp white we painted the living room (Read "Why I Love White" here and "5 Tips for Decorating with White Walls" here.) to provide a clean feeling transition between all the connecting rooms. I patched and repainted the ceiling and never want to do it again. There was mud and dust in my hair and face for days, but as always, it was worth it. I mean, just look at that gorgeous clean and smooth ceiling below!

With a lot of help from a couple of friends, we got the return air vent moved to the wall (yay!) and hired someone to patch and refinish the floors (give me all the heart eyes). The difference in how it made the house feel was incredible! Even one of my friends said that she was surprised at how different just fixing this one space made the house feel. It just made it feel so clean!

And here's the floor once it was finished! I'm sorry these aren't the greatest pictures, but I had to snag them on my phone. You can still see how awesome it turned out!

Again, if we had stayed, I would have added some very simple art to the walls such as one of these book prints from Sugarboo Designs, and some black and white ink drawings that I have of houses we've visited. I also would have replaced the light fixture although this one's not bad. I like how the brass pops agains the white and ties into the brass on the door hardware. And lastly, I would have replaced the switch plates and the attic door due to it being old and dirty and rickety. That would have been it for this small, but impactful place that connected four of the rooms in our house!
